The Stink-Eye

Sometimes that's all Sawyer has to offer. The Thai craft fair really isn't his thing. He's hot, tired, didn't take a morning nap, and why do you keep turning that stupid wheel making cat hair fly up in my face?! Oh well, I enjoyed the craft fair. ThaiCraft is a fair trade organization which means it's all Thai-made crafts sold by the artists themselves. This fair is at the Ambassador Hotel right down Soi 11 behind our apartment building. It takes place once a month and we've done a good deal of Christmas shopping there. They have baskets, pottery, Thai silk, bags, and lots of really unique little odds and ends. Some of it I can do without. I like to give it the old dollar store test. Sometimes atmosphere has a big influence over me as a buyer. If I'm in a big glittery mall with rich people all decked out in their Manolos and freshly Botoxed faces, I'm a little overcome with the spending spirit and think everything I see is a must-have. The same goes for the craft fair...little Thai kids helping their parents at the different tables, ladies like the one above who are enamored by Sawyer (and other babies, I have to admit). Let's buy this, it's from THAILAND and in 2 years I'll never be able to get it, honey pleeeease? Anyway the dollar store test: If this was on the shelf at Dollar King next to Gold's Gym and the Chinese buffet, would it still be a must-have? Would it even be worth that one dollar? This test works pretty well. I have walked by many a must-have collecting dust on my shelf and felt a tinge of embarrassment because I spent so much on something that wasn't that beautiful or interesting just from getting caught up in the moment. It's time to make dinner, this wasn't a very informative blog, sorry. Working on a picture email for everyone that should be sent out soooooon!
