Show and Tell

Last week I had the privilege of attending Sawyer's show and tell at school.  This is a culminating activity after each unit (kind of reminds me of something we used to do with Open Court).  The class came up with a shared goal and also broke into small groups of varying numbers for smaller goals.  The class decided their shared goal would be to build a castle.  Within the first few weeks of school, Sawyer was requesting we send in cardboard boxes.  He also let me know they were trying to figure a way to create a functioning drawbridge.  I was really excited to see the final product of 5-year-old minds at work...at play...

Sawyer was a builder.
All goals had a brief outline and reflection

Outside the classroom is what is known as the "big room."  It's basically a huge hallway between the classrooms that contains all sorts of play areas (kitchen, puppet stage, art centers, etc.).  This is where Sawyer's shared goal in his small group was displayed.

Here is what I saw first:

Sawyer:  Mommy, I made a teepee!
Me:  Wow, Sawyer, that looks great! [wondering who made this teepee]

Then I saw the poster documenting Sawyer and his 2 friends building the teepee.

I remember him telling me they found sticks in the woods on their Friday Forest Walk.

Me:  Oh!!!  You built a teepee!

Decorating the fabric to go around the teepee.  One child was able to sneak the word "poop" onto this fabric.  I have no idea which child this was.

Working with Ms. Kelly to construct (watching Ms. Kelly construct)

You guessed right!  The stacks of squares are indeed a stockpile of marshmallows to roast on the fire.

Some students learned about the flags of different countries represented in class.

"Do you know this is my sister?  Her name is Hadley!"  Yes, her shoes are on the wrong feet.
